Stressed Woman

Have you had these thoughts?

I know I'm doing good work but I need more support.  I know my service is needed but I can't get funding. As daunting as incorporating my nonprofit or filing for tax exempt status may have seemed, it feels like that was the easy part!  Learning how to manage a nonprofit and build a strong governance board seems overwhelming.  I understand my service but I don't understand the business side.  What do I need and where can I get assistance?

Standards for Excellence® in the Nonprofit Sector

Powered by The Standards for Excellence Institute®

Encouraging excellence and integrity in nonprofit management.

The Standards for Excellence®: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector (the code) is the centerpiece of the Standards for Excellence® program. The standards evaluate principles of honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, responsibility, and accountability in nonprofit program operations, governance, human resources, financial management, and fundraising.

The standards set a high benchmark. They go well-beyond the minimum legal requirements by outlining how well-managed and responsibly governed nonprofits should operate.

The Standards cover six areas of nonprofit governance, operations, and management:

  • Mission, Strategy and Evaluation

  • Leadership: Board, Staff, and Volunteers

  • Legal Compliance and Ethics

  • Finance and Operations

  • Resource Development

  • Public Awareness, Engagement and Advocacy

As a Standards for Excellence® Licensed Consultant,
